Duplicati vs Arkame for Linux servers
Duplicati has an open source core (MIT) that works on its own, encrypts on the client, and has a console that starts free.
Arkame focuses on servers: Docker as the Linux default, guided Object Lock, GFS retention and restore in the browser.
Duplicati costs less and does things Arkame does not. The table shows where each one stops.

When to choose Duplicati
Duplicati is a good choice in many cases. Choose Duplicati if:
- You want a free, open source tool that works on its own, with no service account. The Arkame agent does not work without the panel.
- You want AES-256 client-side encryption. Arkame does not encrypt on the client.
- Price matters: the Pro console costs US$ 2 per machine per month billed annually, and Free covers up to 2 machines. Arkame costs US$ 5.
- Your destination is not S3: WebDAV, SFTP or local disk.
- You want included storage, or you need Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace backup.
- You need disk images, VMs or consistent databases without a dump. Arkame does not do those either, and in Docker the before and after commands do not run.
When to choose Arkame
Arkame makes sense when you look after Linux servers and want the path ready-made:
- Your servers run Docker and you want to install the agent with one command, built by the panel.
- You want Object Lock in Compliance mode and GFS retention set up with guidance, and a warning if someone turns versioning off.
- You archive to Glacier or Deep Archive and want restores to handle rehydration.
- You want readable files in the bucket, without needing the program to open them.
- You work in Spanish or Portuguese as well as English: the panel and the site speak all three.
How to switch without losing history
Both can run on the same server for a while. Do not point Arkame at Duplicati’s destination folder.
Create a new bucket for Arkame, with versioning and Object Lock. The storage guide shows how.
Install the agent (Docker is the default on Linux) and create a plan with the same folders as the Duplicati backup.
Click "Run now" and restore a test file.
Keep the Duplicati backups until their retention runs out, and keep the encryption passphrase: without it, they do not open.
FAQ
Is Arkame cheaper than Duplicati?
No. Duplicati’s Pro console costs US$ 2 per machine per month billed annually, Free covers up to 2 machines, and the core is free. Arkame costs US$ 5 per server per month (R$ 25 in Brazil).
Does Arkame encrypt files?
Not on the client: files sit in the bucket as they are on disk. If you need client-side encryption, Duplicati does it.
What about databases?
Arkame copies files. Create a dump (pg_dump, mysqldump, mongodump) and include its folder in the plan. In Docker, schedule the dump in the server’s cron, because the before and after commands do not run there.
Can I keep Duplicati for workstations and use Arkame for servers?
Yes. Use separate buckets, so one tool’s retention never touches the other’s files.
